Per molti di noi, tanto tempo nostro è speso in riunioni, alcune utili e altre, purtroppo, meno. Gran parte di questi incontri è la comunicazione tra diverse parti, l’espressione di nuove idee, l’aiuto per capirsi e l’aggiornamento su nuovi eventi e relazioni. Questa è un’altra parte dell’inglese commerciale che è piena di verbi frasali; Quelle belle combinazioni di un verbo comune e di una preposizione che cambiano il significato del verbo originale, a volte leggermente e a volte completamente.
For many of us, a lot of our time is spent in meetings, some useful and some, unfortunately, less so. A large part of these meetings is communication between different parties, expressing new ideas, helping to understand each other, and updating on new events and reports. This is another part of Business English that is full of phrasal verbs; those beautiful combinations of a common verb and a preposition that change the meaning of the original verb, sometimes slightly and sometimes completely.
Diamo un’occhiata ad alcuni di questi verbi frasali che sono collegati alle riunioni, sia tenendo che partecipando ad esse:
Let’s take a look at some of these phrasal verbs that are connected to meetings, both holding and partaking in them:
- Bring something forward (anticipare – ITA)
“I don’t think I can make that meeting tomorrow as I have a dentist appointment, can you bring it forward to today?”
Bringing a date or an event forward means reorganising it closer to you in your current situation, essentially doing it sooner or earlier than originally considered.
“Non credo di poter fare quell’incontro domani perché ho un appuntamento dal dentista, puoi anticiparlo a oggi?”
Bring something forward significa riorganizzarlo più vicino a te nella tua situazione attuale, (anticipare) essenzialmente farlo prima o prima di quanto originariamente considerato.
- Put something back (postecipare – ITA)
“If we put the customer meeting back to tomorrow, we will have enough time to finish the project today.”
L’esatto opposto di anticipare, “push” o “put back” una data significa rimandarla. Ancora una volta usiamo la posizione visiva su un calendario, spostando la data più vicino e in questo caso più lontano da te.
The polar opposite to bring forward, pushing, or putting a date back means postponing it. Again we use the visual position on a calendar, moving the date closer and in this case further away from you.
- Call off something (disdire – ITA)
“There’s been a problem at the factory, we need to call off all the meetings organised today to manage this problem”
Quando tu “call off” un evento o un appuntamento, desideri annullare l’evento. Questo può anche essere esteso all’uso per le relazioni e altre attività organizzate.
When you call off an event or an appointment, you wish to cancel the event. This can also be extended to use for relationships and other organised activities.
- Raise and Deal with something (presentare, affrontare – ITA)
“I would like to raise a point regarding our colleague’s behaviour so the appropriate manager can deal with it”
“Raising” un punto è un modo alternativo di introdurre un nuovo argomento o rendere le persone consapevoli di qualcosa. Questo punto o questione dovrebbe quindi essere affrontato o gestito in modo appropriato.
Raising a point is an alternative way of introducing a new subject or making people aware of something. This point or matter should then be dealt with or managed appropriately.
- Weigh up something (valutare – ITA)
“Before we make this decision, we should weigh up all our options carefully”
Questa espressione significa considerare attentamente tutto, bilanciando tutti i “pro e contro” prima di prendere una grande decisione.
This expression means to carefully consider everything, balancing all the “pros and cons” before making a big decision.
- Look into something (investigare – ITA)
“These results are different from what we expected, can you look into them?”
Questa espressione è usata come alternativa all’indagine sull’argomento. Ciò può richiedere una ricerca o un processo di comprensione più dettagliato.
This expression is used as an alternative to investigating the subject. This may require research or a more detailed process of understanding.
- Step in (intervenire – ITA)
“I don’t think we are making any progress, do you mind if I step in and take control?”
“Stepping in” può significare interrompere un oratore per condividere i tuoi pensieri, tuttavia, può anche significare qualcuno che cerca di far conoscere la propria presenza e cercare di controllare la situazione. Questo è preso dalla frase molto letterale dal primo passo per entrare nella stanza.
Stepping in can mean interrupting a speaker to share your thoughts, however, it can also mean someone trying to make their presence known and try to control the situation. This is taken from the very literal phrase of walking into the room.
8. Drag on and Press on (trascinarsi, andare avanti – ITA)
“This meeting is really dragging on, we will never finish”, “Well if we just press on maybe we can cover the final topics for discussion before the end of the day”.
Quando qualcosa si “drags on” (si trascina), continua per molto più tempo del previsto, o almeno sembra così a molti dei partecipanti. Una linea d’azione appropriata è quella di “press on” (andare avanti), questo significa spingere oltre la barriera della stanchezza o della noia per raggiungere il tuo obiettivo.
When something drags on, it continues for much longer than was expected, or at least it feels that way to many of the participants. One appropriate course of action is to press on, this means pushing through the barrier of tiredness or boredom to get to your objective.
Come abbiamo visto prima, queste piccole combinazioni di frasi possono sbloccare un linguaggio e un modo completamente nuovi di comprendere le persone che dipendono da loro. Ci saranno alternative che potrebbero essere più accessibili a un madrelingua italiano, tuttavia, questi sono i termini che vengono utilizzati ogni giorno da milioni di persone in tutto il mondo nei loro incontri di inglese commerciale.
